| | The horse I ride never lowers his head. I tried lots and lots of half halts but he just ignored them. He just holds his head up and goes the speed he wants to. He is'nt spooky or loco or anything. But how can I get him to lower his head? He also has lots of energy, I went to let him canter a little faster and he decides to gallop and then starts bucking. He is big but I've ridden bigger, they are subbmisive and will slow down immediatly if you tell them to, but he wont. He is ok at the walk but thats it. I can feel his entire body tense and in a " I'm in control" feeling. So how do I get him to obey me, drop his head, and submit? |

| I'm thining that those other "submissive" horses were trained a bit better than yours. I would DEFINITELY suggest a trainer. It's hard to do any good with it on your own, because all your cues could be clearly messing him up and getting him ticked off.

Collection(or lowering the head and obeying as you call it) is not about "submission", it's about the horse using himself correctly, moving off your aids, and being in partnership with the rider. | Have you ever been to the ocean? When the waves come in the build up speed then they slow down come down and draw back. Watch the way the waves go and aply this to the horse, you need to put your leg on and get him freely forward until his/her back starts to loosen and they can drop down and be light of your aids and round. It kind of goes like this, leg leg half halt leg leg leg half halt, leg leg ect. Just remeber to use your legs and not your hands.

| | i rode him today. And by the way he is not my horse and i do have a trainer. And i told stacey about it and she said, well she saw him bucking, and then said its because i'm the only one who rides him on saterdays so he just has aalot of energy and is really excited to get out and get ridden. |

First of all he just need to learn how to accept the bit and be comfortable with it. You can just cant make him put his head "down", he needs to beable to round his back and bring him hind end under himself. Period. Horses have really have just ligamints and there spines to carry a rider, so by the idea and concept behind collection is for the horse to round his body (like a bridge) and even distrubute the riders weight.

| You do not ask a horse to just "submit". A horse and rider are partners, one should not have to "submit" to the other. Sorry, just a pet peeve. The article Aurora posted should help you, I'm not going to post a novel length reply because my computer is two and a half seconds from freezing up and kicking me off anyways...
