he DEFINATELY needs to gain weight. like *Aurora* said. trust me, barrel horses usually get hard work outs already, so you need to balance feed and exercise so that he can keep the weight and muscle on him. just trust us, he needs more weight, he's not gonna get too fat...this is my barrel horse...i can even see in her front profile, you can see her tummy. i can just feel her ribs, not see them EDIT: btw, being in shape doesn't mean being thin or skinny.

*Won't be on anymore..sub expired...not renewing. So good bye chillies!*

He should always have access to good grass hay. Don't give him tons of alfalfa hay, but he should always have access to grass hay if he is stabled. Ideally you should put him in a large pasture and let him out during the day (or night if he fades or if you live in a really hot place) however, if you can't do this, I would give him more hay, and maybe give him a small evening feed if he is only getting food in the morning.
And as *Aurora* said, I would talk to your vet before doing anything to his diet.
I hope I helped, didn't sound rude, and that I didn't repeat myself to much.
Good luck!

Add just a little more weight on him; you can see his ribs. Other than that, I think he's good.

| ya.. he does look skinny. try weight gain supplements, feed him twice a day, make sure he has grass, if not hay, and deworm him regularly. u might need to start riding him every other day to give him days off. regular vitamin supplements will keep him healthy too. he does look muscular though. my friends horse was really skinny and they used panacure power pack dewormer on him & put him in a bigger pasture w/ more grass & it made a world of a difference!! check w/ your vet to see what he/she thinks!!

~EventSTA~ (6/12/2008)
*Aurora* (6/12/2008) I'd say he is about 50-100lbs underweight. You should be able to see and feel the outline of his ribs, but if you can see them like that, they are too thin. I would seriously ask your vet though. He/she will be the best judge, and will be able to suggest something to help him gain weight if needed. A general rule is that you should feel a horse's ribs but not see them. Once you start to see them you know the horse is underweight. Ditto. He needs weight. My old vet said that you should be able to barely be able to see his last 2 ribs by his hind end. Buts thats all. You should be able to feel most ribs tho.

He is just a little under weight. Prancer used to look like that. It didnt take long to get her to gain weight though.

| I don't think he is to skinny but I think you should give him a cup of corn for about a week if he doesn't gain weight very easily otherwise if he gains weight easily then a half of a cup of corn for 1 week to put a little but not to much weight on him. Megan P.S. this happened with my hores too.

I'd have to say he's too thin. The only time I've seen ribs on a horse is if they're a racehorse and super fit, or underweight.

actually, i don't see any muscle loss and he doesn't look too thin. since you said he was a barrel horse, he may need more grain but keep excersising him the same, if that makes since? he is beautiful though

He is too thin. You should increase his grass and hay intake, and to put fat on him add a half cup of corn oil in his feed. You can find corn oil at pretty much any store. But, he is too thin if you can see his ribs.

i say yes he definatly needs to gain some wait and muscle especially if you want him to be a barrel horse.
but definatly talk to your vet.
to buid muscle in his hindquarters try trot/cantering up hills, that helps.

I think it's great that you want him to be in tiptop condition but he's to skinny he need's to gain enough so that you can't see his ribs. =]

He's a BEAUTIFUL horse! But yeah, if you can see his ribs, just add a little more food into his feed.

| He is slighlty underweight, I would feed him a little more hay than normal and see if that helps. Post this if you want to protect the wild mustangs.

I know you're new here and everything, but this topic is a couple years old, please don't bump it up anymore. I know other people have, but check the original date before answering, please. Answering this now really won't help them out at all, I'm sure they already solved their problem, if not, they probably would have asked it again if they wanted more answers.
