How do you get two images to open in GIMP so that you can blend the two?

It's my first time using GIMP and I have no clue how to. How do you get pictures from a file, and how do you blend, so it's not all smudgy? Oh and how do you blend? I got the pictures out and they are just ontop of each other.

if this clears it up any it says somewhere in here the answers to ur questions =]

its a pictue so you can save it =]

i cant figure out number 8 please help!

Question 8 states that you should add a new layer and then a new layer mask.
