I am looking for a saddle for my horse that I could eventually show in. I don't know alot about the overall show "trends". I am sorta looking for do's and don't's advice is good too thanks

Well... where I'm from, brown leather is more "socially acceptable" then black. That's really the only thing, just make sure it fits you and your horse. One recommendation? Pessoa Gen-X. That's what I have, and I've used it on 12hh ponies and 17hh horses and everything in between. It has fit all of them perfectly fine too.

What discipline are you planning to show in?

Get a nice, comfortable saddle that fits you and your horse well. If you want it in time for the show season, I would suggest a used saddle in good condition. This way you save some money before the prices raise even more for the show season, and it will most likely be broken in already.
Look around at some different brands, and what kind of saddle you want...which also depends on the discipline. Try to pick one that you will use for a few years.

I suggest getting a just slightly used saddle if you can find one. When I bought my saddle I was splitting the cost with my parents so I wanted to find a nicer quality used saddle. Unfortunately, I couldn't really find one that suited me well enough so I ended up buying a Collegiate Finalist Close Contact saddle. It looks nice and is on the more affordable end but is no where near just a wintec!

My advice would be to get one in a brown shade of leather because black is usually just for dressage (you'd probably be looked down upon/laughed at if you had a black saddle in the hunter ring...) Also, I suggest getting a close contact because I think they are so much better than all purpose saddles.

If you can't afford a nice brand that's new then get a used one. I LOVE barnsbys from the bottom of my heart. They're amazing. Keith bryan, devoucoux, passier, and stubben are other great brands. If you do hunter the get a brown close contact saddle. If you so dressage get a black dressage saddle. If you event you can get away with using a close contact saddle for lower levels. I like darker close contact saddles but that's just me.

I don't lik circuits, collegiates, kincades, or wintecs.

I'll put this out here before I say anything. Hana I greatly respect your opinion so don't think I'm trying to...outrule it or anything. I realize all saddles can be different depending on the rider and horse.

I have a wintec. No. I really don't suggest them over leather though mine isn't that bad. Honestly it was fine. Never hurt my horse and I showed in it and never had problems.

Now I have a circuit CC in which I am in love with, it was affordable and Iv'e ridden in many models of circuits. Mine broke in quickly, cleans up well and is just really comfortable.

If you can, look around at used saddles to save some $$ and see if your can test ride them. Take your time and find a saddle just right for you and your horse that will last.

^ I agree with Sadie, a lot of it is how you fit in saddles and your position when riding, it makes a world of difference.
As others said, brown is usually preferred over black, but it's not a sincere crime if you do. Most saddles can be shown if they're safe, comfortable for horse and rider, and it's not falling apart.

I'm used to riding in 30 year old saddles most people (like snafflez!) would cry if they had to ride in, and the wintec i used on the beast for awhile was far more uncomfy that those things ever were/are O.O

I have a collegiate. I really like it. It's really comfortable and feels broken in on the first day you use it.

Hold you ponies. I realize a lot of people honestly hate the things and think they are uncomfortable. That is fine and dandy. I never had a problem, mine really wasn't that uncomfortable. I trail rode in it and showed jumpers. But that is my own opionion.

No, I mean cripplingly uncomfortable xD. "I wish I was dead" uncomfortable xD. Not "oh my, this is triflingly obnoxious" xD. Granted it was new probably 6 or 7 years ago, but I'll forever hold my grudge against that ... thing xD. I twitch just thinking about it xD.

I personally am not a fan of Wintecs. I ride in them on some of the lesson horses, but I'd really prefer not to ride in them.
One had a really high cantle, another had very uncomfortable, too big, knee rolls. I also prefer to use leather saddles...
But some people do really like them, so you should just try a lot of different saddles.

Danggg. Maybe my butt is just odd. But Iv'e ridden in a CC one on a lesson horse and then mine. They really didn't feel any different then the leathers I rode.

Go with a saddle that fits your budget, horse and you. It doesn't matter how good it looks, that's just a bonus! (;

Mmm. At least have the excuse of getting good deals on it though. My coach spent $1200 on Axel's saddle (originally for Tailor, until Lyndsay bought him) and it's freaking orange.  It's better than it was now that it's been oiled a few times, but it's still orange. It's so ugly xD

Was it kind of like the way the Circuit Elites look? I hate the colour, but it's affordable, and apparently good quality.
