Hey guys, as most of you know I finally got my own horse (Yay!) and we're going to try and show in some of the A circuit shows in my state. Only, I'm on a supertight budget.

Any ideas, tips or tricks to save money? Comments on all areas of showing from clothing to grooming are welcome!

Hmmm, maybe we could compile a list for all YRians, not just me.

Proud to wear my helmet. Proud Californian. Proud horse-lover.

Hm...I briefly remember a YR Magazine with some tips..so I'll try to remember some, and dig it out sometime.

-Buy used show clothing in good condition
-Go with a buddy, and split the trailer, etc. costs
-Don't enter a whole bunch of shows in an outing
-Try not to be sucked into the sales at the show grounds
-Bring your own lunch from home
-Learn how to braid!

Well, that's all I can remember from the issue...I'll post more if they come to me. Good luck!

I am on the same boat. I lease a nice hunter pony which we are going to be doing A circuit. But, i also have four other older horses at home, and they suck in a lottt of money. So, my budget is a lot less than most people's. Anyways, here is my tips.

*Learn to Braid. I braid Will myself, and it saves us $40 per show.
*Do not get a stall, if possible. A shows are usually 3-7 days, so yes you would usually need one. But if the show is close by, or only one day, just show out of the trailer. Stalls at A shows around here are about $150 a weekend, so when possible we show out of the trailer.
*Limit yourself. Do one hunter divison, and one equitation divison(or medal, or jumpers, whatever you will be doing). Limit yourself, dont just show in everything the horse is elegiable for.
*Pick a few top shows you want to do a year, and let yourself splerge on them. Other than those few, maybe only do B/C rateds, or Locals.

Everything you can, buy secondhand.
Learn how to braid yourself, saves money.
Only pick the classes you really want to do and CAN do. For example, I'm not showing any hunters this year except at schooling shows because Axel isn't good at it. He can make it around the course just fine, but it wouldnt be a nice hunter round so why waste the money?
Split trailering fees with someone else if possible.
Bring your own food, show food is expensive.
Only buy what you absolutely need.

A lot of tack shops buy and sell used tack. You can also try eBay and other auction sites. Some tack shops even have the "economy" option, which is a cheaper version of the product. It usually is not great quality though, but it's good enough until you can afford better.

I show on a budget too, so I've got quite a few tricks up my sleeve. ;)

*Don't buy showground foods. Not only are they usually unhealthy, but they can be expensive.

*The same goes for tack sales on showgrounds. You can find the same things for much cheaper in consignment sales.

*Buy your horsey clothing used. I was a little hesitant to do this at first, but it's turned out to be a lifesaver, and not gross at all.

*Sell your breeches, saddles, boots, etc. on Craigslist or a local consignment shop when you outgrow them, or don't need them.

*Don't feel like you have to go to every show.

*When you buy things, even used, try to buy high quality. The longer something lasts, the more money it will end up saving you.

*Pre-enter your classes, it can save you up to an average of 3 dollars per class.

But oh, oh, oh, how was I supposed to know?

Tips Tips Tips...............HMMMMMM

Oh here we go

1.Use show clothes that you already have
2.Bring food with you to shows
3.When you see something you want hold off
on it cause you know shows are exspensive
4.Shop for deals at ctores on clothes, shoes, food, etc.

I'm feeling kind of dizzy
I need you here with me
I'm running out of breath

So bust through the door
And tell me I don't have to wait no more

Hard as it is, sometimes you just have to cut back. Don't go to that show two hours away; instead, go to a more local one.

-Don't go to an A show if your horse can't take the comp. You will loose money by that.
-Split your shows up. For ex...  Don't do 2 in 2 weeks. Give yourself a break so you can get some money for the next show.
-Only buy things that you NEED.
-At A shows, you can't show outside, so limit yourself in classes to fit in the cost of a stall.

If you show the A circuit, you know you don't necessarily have to show in the Medals or even in the expensive Modified's or anything. They have Non-Rated Hunters which usually, at least at my HITS Park and most of the A and AA shows around here, have no Division Fees so you're only paying $30-$40 a class. A lot of A and AA circuit shows are tough on a horse but there are A LOT of A shows, and if you apparently show them you should know this, HuntSeat, that are Ship Ins, not necessarily stall bound. I have shown the A and AA circuit, last year I was a photographer for a lot of these shows, and this year I'm showing in some AA shows. All those times, 95% of those riders were ship ins and didn't stay the entire week or three weeks of the show.

And what are you saying you can't show outside? That's complete crap. All HITS shows are outside unless it's pouring rain, sometimes you show outside in the pouring rain in all-weather footing. If you do something such as HITS, you don't have to do HITS 1-5 or 6, you can come in for say a few days and show or come in for the day to show you just won't have a stall to keep your horse. If you do A or AA outside of HITS, you can order a day stall or just ship in for the day.

Don't say things about the A circuit, if you don't know what you're talking about because honestly, sounds like you really don't know what in the heck you're talking about.

^ Thanks for the tips about stalls, I knew that was going to be a major expense, but if I can get a day stall it'd be awesome. I have to check and see if my trainer will let me show out of the trailer, because I'd just love to do that.

I love showing out of my trailer, because Bear doesn't really like stalls so it makes it easier but he does tolerate them. Just, make sure you pack your trailer a day or two before the show with your little stuff so you don't forget anything. The day before the show, have a checklist ready and go through it to make sure you have everything. It's cheaper and day stalls usually aren't too expensive. I found a day stall for $50 which really isn't bad at all.

I have at least 8 lists before a show XDD I <3 lists.

Well then, if you show Arabs, don't say anything about the 'A' circuit because each circuit is different. YOu can't characterize all national-level competitions into one because they are all very very different.
