Dozing soundly on the ground beside the now ash-filled, small blazed fire, Chayton kept guard on night duty, opposite his brother, Falilo. The elders had been assigning the older children of the tribe, female and male, a duty to sleep outside every night, nothing but a thin grass-lined mat to keep them off the dirt beside the largest fire pit, the one in the center of the teepees. Now, the blaze was reduced to a soft orange glow, needing to be re-lit for the day.

Pulling her legs up against her body, Tala rested her chin on her knees, looking up at the night sky. The soft breathing of her family came from one of the teepees. Unlike them, she was not asleep. For some reason she took comfort in the night. Alone under the stars, she felt safer than she did during the day. Looking towards the fire, she saw two of the men, now almost asleep. One was but a year older than her but they had taken on duties much larger.

Nahuel turned slowly from his side to his back, taking in a deep breath as he did so. The soft smell of the damp earth filled his nose, along with the unmistakable scent of the small fire that burned in the night not too far from where he lay. His deep brown eyes stared up at the vast night sky, and he took it upon himself to study the shape of the stars. His father had taught him to read the stars, almost as if one would read a story book. The stars however, told a different story every time you looked, each star contained the life of a person. Ever since his father had passed almost a year ago, Nahuel could not keep himself from searching for the star of his father. He knew it would be up there somewhere, but where? He sighed lightly and gazed silently over at the others near the fire. He wasn't sure If they were asleep, but there seemed to be an air of deep thought around them.

Lifting her head, Tala looked around at the others who seemed to be asleep. Storm grey eyes seemed to break through the darkness as she sat still, not moving around. She should have been asleep yet she wasn't. Of course, she wasn't one on watch that night but that didn't mean she had to sleep.

Nahuel listened quietly to his own breathing, adjusting its tempo out of bordom. His eyes traveled to the center of the fire, and he watched the bright orange coals flicker at its base. The fire was such a mysterious thing, it was so dangerous-- it could kill anything it pleased, whenever it felt like it, but at the same time, the fire was the center to thier lives. They couldn't live without it. His mind suddenly snapped back to reality and he sat up slowly, bracing the weight of his body with his left hand so that his fingers sunk slightly into the soil. In the darkness, he looked to see if anyone was awake, and his eyes traveled to see if he could find the bright white of anothers eyes.
