Axel goes in a 5.5" rubber mullen-mouth pelham. When I first started riding him and he was still crazy, we tried a three-ring gag for more control. He hated it. Now that he's being really good, we've tried two different snaffles for flatting. He's hated both of them xD One of them was a D-Ring with copper rollers, like Erin posted, and we tried a french link. He stopped and turned and everything, it wasn't that he wasn't ridable, he was just extremely irritated. As soon as he went back into the pelham, he was happy again.

How do you like that? Woody uses a pelham too, and is happy in it, I'm looking into rubber pelhams though, for jumpers. xD

We are still experimenting with george but he seems to like the myler bit were using now. They are designed to not pinch the horses mouth. Here is one.

Yeah, we use it for the Jumpers too :) He loves it, and I really like him in it. The rubber stops it from being too harsh on him, but there's still the added control. Plus he just caan't stand snaffles for some reason :/ So it's nice, he likes it and I like it.

First it's they're, than and too in that sentence, and secondly, there is no "just snaffle" unless you mean the standard D-ring single jointed snaffle? :P

Jumpers fordeewin!
Woody needs the leverage for jumpers, so I was thinking rubber, and the control of the shanks. So, this is double proof that Neefeles needs to send me that pelham. xD

So many X)

Right now he's in a loose ring, but I'm switching back this week into my 3 ring gag.
He showed all last year in his rubber pelham. This year we're prolly gunna show him in the 3 ring for the jumpers and the rubber pelham for the hunters, maaaybe a snaffle if we can manage it. We'll see XD

I also own a jointed pelham, a french link, and my recently acquired hollow D.
We've tried him in a plain D, a rubber, a fulmer, and a full cheek snaffle as well as tooons others. :P Really, we switch bits at least once a month. He figures them all out and you have to keep changing it up to keep him happy XD

The bit ring has nothing to do with the harshness of the mouthpiece. D-rings and full cheeks provide more leverage for turning, but do not make the bit more harsh.
