Hey! Cantering is really fun and easy when you get the hang of it. :) If you need to (to feel more secure), you can always grab a bit of the mane or the martingale/neck strap for balance for the first couple of times. :D

My first time cantering was when I was maybe 9 years old, on a little Fleabitten Grey Arabian. :) I think I cantered on a lunge line first, but that may have been my first bareback canter... can't remember!

Anyways, don't be scared! Just be confident and ride on!

I was riding in the pasture bareback. Golden got scared and took off cantering. I almost fell off onto the fence. lmbo

Cantering can be really scary and fast at first, but once you get used to it it's really fun. :] I'd recommend riding at the canter the first few times on a lunge line. That way you can get used to how it feels and work on not bouncing too much without having the added worry of controlling your horse.

I used to think cantering was scary, but that might just be me xP The first time I cantered was in my second lesson, the pony just started cantering for about four strides before she went back down to trot lmao. I didn't think it was scary then, though.
I've fallen off cantering before; most people have. But that's mainly because my horse is a spaz -.-

Cantering is less exhausting than trotting.

I fell off because the horse tripped around the corner and landed on my head.

But it didn't hurt or anything

Haha, I remember when I first started cantering it felt soo fast to me, but I got used to it after a couple lessons. It will feel really different from trotting, but I definetly prefer it. :]

And yeah, I've fallen off cantering. Most people who ride horses probably have.

Oh no! It's so fun.. I love it! It's fast and really awesome, and yes, you fall off cantering, but you can fall of walking and trotting too. It's part of riding :P

I think if you can do a sitting tort, you can definitely canter. It can be a little scary at first, and like a few people have said, starting out on a lunge line would be a good idea. Before my first canter I was soooo nervous, and now cantering to me is like doing a posting trot - no big deal. Good luck and have fun!!

Try it and don't be scared. Don't put yourself in my position. Maybe 6 months ago to a year I was terrified to canter. I could do a sitting trot but i was absolutely terrified because my first fsll was when a horse bucked and took off cantering.

whatever you do, don't get scared and try it. it's really fun. i regret never trying it before. it held me back from a lot of things. Don't be scared to try it. you'll love it.

Like everyone suggested, try cantering on a lunge line. Also, if you are confident with your sitting trot, you should be good. Lastly, don't be scared to grab some mane. I did that once.

Good luck. hope I helped. And don't chicken out like I did.

FYI: My sub ran out so if I suddenly disappear, that's why. It was nice knowing you all!

Don't worry about it too much, because the more you tense up, the harder it'll be to keep your seat at the canter. It's a really good idea to start cantering on a lunge line, because you have less things to worry about, and you're in a more controlled environment. It's actually very relaxing to canter, and if you just relax and move with the horse, it can be very calming =]

My first fall was when I was learning how to canter. A motorcycle came by realllyyy loudly on the road right next to the arena, and the horse I was riding freaked and bucked. I fell on my side, and I was a bit sore for a few days, but mostly it took a long time for me to get my confidence back enough for me to start cantering again.

Good luck; you'll be fine! Just remember to breathe ;]

when i first started cantering, i always lost my stirrup but my trainer was amazed i never fell off because i kept my heel down even after i lost my stirrup. You're not gonna catch on to cantering the first time. You might get it on your 5 try maybe.

Hope this helped. =)

One of the most important things is to relax. Instead of thinking about the canter too much, focus on keeping your heels down, shoulders back, and sitting deep in your seat. If it helps take a few deep breaths. I also suggest that you do your first few canters on the lunge line. It really helps to get some of the pressure off of you, so you can focus on your seat and position. Going on a nice smooth cantering horse is also a plus!
Yes, I did fall off in the canter (or was it a gallop?) But it was an accident. My horse and I were warming up at the trot, and he had two weeks off of being ridden. He is the type of horse who needs to be worked, at all times. Well, he spooked, bolted, turned very sharply, picked up speed, and with me being totally off for the sharp turn, he pulled down on the reins very hard, and I fell off and fractured my arm. But he is a very moody, "I'll do it on my own terms" kind of horse. But, it was a total accident, and that's his natural instinct, to flee.
Good luck with the cantering!

cantering does take a little getting used to, but it helps if you have a smooth horse (and lunge line, and trainer... basically what the others said ;). On most horses (esp. English-y breeds like TBs), the canter is WAY better than the trot. Yes, I have fallen off cantering, but it doesn't hurt any differently than falling off at the walk or trot. Hope this helps!!!

edit: hopefully you're smart enough to realize this, but don't attempt cantering bareback for awhile... just don't. you need to get a "feel" for the canter, balance, etc. oh, and... CANTERING IS A LOT OF FUN! just thought I'd say that.

I have only been cantering for about three years, and by now I have really gotten the hang of it. It is a lot of fun and definitely a very smooth ride. You can always grab some mane. I am sure you will enjoy it. Tell me how it goes!

cantering is really fun when you get the hang of it. I started cantering my first year riding. My instructor said I was doing really well so she taught me and I was fine. However on that same day the dog let out this huge sneeze and the horse spooked causing me to fall. I got right back on though.

Dun worry, cantering is funn! :3 Once you get the hang of it, I assure you you'll be fine. MOst of my falls HAVE happened at the canter, but thats because I enjoy it to much, and try silly things. Like thighserscises on horseback.... Don't do that. It's not as fun as you'd think.

But oh, oh, oh, how was I supposed to know?

Don't worry about cantering, trust me.  Once you get the hang of it, it's like flying.  Just relax your body and sort of go with the flow.  Everyone on here has given great advice.  Take it!
