Which do you prefer when riding western? I mean like in a lesson, or just trail riding or somthing, not in shows. Lately in my lessons we've been doing bolth, so I was just curious what you guys prefered. Personally, neck reining is great but only if your horse is nicely trained to it. The lesson horses at my barn are, well, you could say not very well experienced in that area so its not so fun.. XD

I prefer the one-handed/neck reining lol.
It's just easier for me to relax. But when Jack needs serious schooling I go two-handed every now and then when he needs it.

Cool! It would be so nice to be able to ride a nice horse like Jack sounds (from the bits and pieces i've managed to pick up and remember in the past)! My lesson is at the end of the day and the horses are always rather tired and somtimes grumpy. They want you off, so two handed gives me more control, especially since they're not that well trained in neck reining. :)

Haha thanks! :)
He's a good boy, he just get a little dudly at times, lol.
And he's pretty much a dog. xD He goes by voice commands that I taught him for when we're riding. :P

| I like neck reining but since I am training Prancer we ride with a Sniffle bit and two handed. You use two handed when training because the horse understands it a little better and as you progress you can switch to neckreining because it makes it a little more difficult.

I two hand rein for speed and neck rein for pleasure. I need to practice neck reining more, but I also need to practice pleasure more, but I love speed.

I've actually never tried neck reining before. The horse I rode western before at my old barn was still being trained, and so she didn't know how to neck rein yet. :P I really wanna try it, but alas I haven't been riding western. xP

I think I prefer neck reining though I use a little of both everytime I ride. When I'm learning something new I use two hands but walk jog and some loping and most practicing horsemanship and stuff I use onehand with neck reining. It really depends on what I'm doing

I feel I relax more and stay in rythm with my horse better when I just use one hand and neck reining. But sometimes I ride two handed western if needed.

I love neck reining, but we only have two horses who know how to do it. I once tried to teach a pony, cause my instructor didn't mind, and it sooooo failed. XD I've been using two handed for the past year or so, and I've been liking it a lot.

lol at my barn they try to half train the horses to better neck rein so even when you're riding two handed you're supposed to use some outside rein pressure on the neck, but most of the horses are still completely terrible at it! XD I can't imagine completely training a horse to do it! Two handed is what my instructor usually has us do, and I personally like it better. :)

I ride mostly Neck Reining because Sherman is trained to. Sometimes when he is acting like an air head I use 2 hands but rarely. Sherman is pretty well trained so I am not all that afraid to fall off even though it is something like 5 feet to the ground.

Thats cool that he's trained to do that. The horses at my barn go both ways (usually western though) so neck reining is not, apparently, one of the high priorities. :)
