Sometimes i wear a helmet. My riding instructor taught me how to stay on. When you feel like your falling off, lean forward and hug the horses neck. that's how i stay on.

yes all the way! Recently, my helmet saved me from a cracked skull but it didn't save me from a broken wrist :( I was bucked off and landed flat on my face and broke my wrist. The first question the paramedics asked me was "Were you wearing a helmet?"

SideSaddle_Rider7 (8/31/2009) Sometimes i wear a helmet. My riding instructor taught me how to stay on. When you feel like your falling off, lean forward and hug the horses neck. that's how i stay on. Don't do that. My friend did that once while riding bareback, she hit her head on the horse, she got a cunushion; because she was hugging the horse.

Thanks Bree!

I wear one most of the time, always when I ride Dundee. I trust him. But I have fallen off of him quite a few times and I like being safe, thanks.
But in the summer when I take care of this ranch some people in my PC own, and I just hop on the ponies bareback in the pasture and canter around a little bit, I normally don't. I know these ponies, they're not going to do anything. They're ridden by 8 and 5 year olds, although one of the ponies is a 3ft hunter. Sometimes I don't if I'm at my friends house and we just hack the horses back from the pasture.

thanks jordyn for the banner

Always! I'd rather be safe then sorry...anyway at my barn and most barns around it, wearing helmets are a requirement. I've never seen anyone at my barn (even with their own horses) not wearing helmets.

horsefreakgirl26 (12/5/2009) I am forced to wear a helmet, but if it were up to me, I would ride without one. Same here. I have to ride with one in my lessons because its required and if your under 18 you are supposed to ride with one but most kids don't...except for me. My parents ground me for a week or two if i ride without one :/

always. ok, so there have been a few times where i was having a very forgetful day, and hopped on without one, but then i realized it 1/2way thru my ride and go grab one. anyway, it's required (at my stable and by law), my mom would kill me if i didn't, i rather be able to talk after falling off, and such. my friend doesn't wear one though, she has ALOT of hair, and claims it gets to hot. i think if you're stupid enough to not wear a helmet, then i guess there's nothing to protect with it anyway.

always always always. I don't feel safe without one. I haven't fallen off yet but I know I will, and when I do I want to be able to live after it.

Jump-The-Jump (8/30/2009) I almost always wear one. Ocassionally I wont if its just a hot day that I'm out hacking BJ for a little bit, he won't do anything and if he were to spook I'm sure i wouldn't fall. If I'm riding one of the western horses up at the barn I work at I don't wear one, simply because I never actually have my helmet up there..and they are big quarter horses that can't get their heels in the air. they won't get me off either..But when I'm at the barn I currently board at and am jumping or riding my trainers horses and working them, I always wear one. You never know what the more agile, flightly ones will do.
I really hope you mean those SPECIFIC quarter horses, and not just "big quarter horses" in general.

I do sometimes. If I'm being lazy, I'm guilty of not wearing one. But if it's one of Those Days where Happy is off his rocker, the helmet goes on.
I only wear a helmet at 4-H shows, wear it is required. In my discipline, we're supposed to wear derbies.

First off, this post is from nearly a year ago. Second, she owns a Quarter Horse and knows they're perfectly capable of bucking. ;]

Always. I know too many people who have gotten concussions from not wearing a helmet and falling off, and I also know many people who have worn helmets and they save their lives. Remember, safety first, always.

Always. I don't remember ever hopping on without one. It doesn't matter how much you trust your horse, it takes one spook and a fall and you could possibly end up with a fatal injury. Who knows.
I mean, look at Courtney King-Dye.
If I didn't wear one of them, I'd probably be brain-dead by now...
