so I've been retraining this paint gelding Cruizer. he's a very strongheaded and heavy on his front. he was trained really harshly as a 2yr old and trained to jump early. so he's been taught to listen to the rein cues more than the seat and legs. he's been doing good at the trot with my legs back. but when we canter and my legs slide forward, i go to refix them and he bucks. is it tempermental or just that he's uncomfortable. should i just ride it out?

and his head set. my trainer says he tenses his neck and sets it that way. iv been trying to give him lots of rein and rub with my legs so he goes off the bit. but he seems to tense and set his neck when he's uncomfortable. my cues dont seem to work. i ride him in a snaffle, he used to be ridden in a slotted-cheeked kimblewick and it explains the headset....

so if you can, can you please give me a few tips or suggestions!!!???? thankyou!

Ride it out for the time being.
But if you continue to refix your legs, and he bucks, it may be uncomfotable to him when your seat and legs move and your weight shifts in a different direction. Maybe check saddle fit.

As for the headset...hmm, you could try putting one of those apple flvored wraps-or any flavored bit wrap-on his bit, and even though he could be a bit fussy and play around with it, he may relax and learn to enjoy his new bit choice.
Or you could put him in a rubber, maybe like a Happy Mouth snaffle. I have one for Jack and he loves it and does amazing in it.

Hmmm, workout and do lots of off the horse exercises to help keep your legs in place that way you wont have to fix them :) and just find a rein contact he's happy with and keep encouraging him to lift and round his back and allow periodic stretchy times. The haflinger mare I ride in lessons will truly trot around with her nose an inch off the ground. It'll take some time for him to realize you aren't gonna load him down whith gadgets or force a false frame and he'll learn to relax with time.

>:( I'm happy hateful

This is how my lil friend feels about Parelli

thanks...i bought a flavored wrap. i talked to my trainer and she said he's doing becuase he's confused. he's never been asked to trot or canter with a leg que and so he feels the need to chew at the bit. she said he'd work into in.

and also i pretty solid with my legs at any gait but he has the rocking horse canter and it totally makes me want to sit deeper but also my legs come forward...but im gonna try some bareback....

thanks guys for the help!!!

Just giving him rein and pushing him forward isn't really going to get him on the bit unless he's been like really trained. But Pepper used to be somewhat like this except he'd tense, set his neck, and run >.< dang pony! Anywayy, what I've been doing with him for the past..2 months. Is just working on circles and serpentines. First I have to ask, does he leg yield or at least move away from your leg? Even if he doesn't really it'll help with that too. But go on a 20m circle and using your outside rein and inside leg your going have your outside rein open, so bring it out a smidge and then using your inside leg push him over to that outside rein, while also making sure your bending him. You can use some inside rein with that just make sure when he DOES move over and come down you GIVE it right away. So your going to do that staying within a 20m circle, going from a small circle to a bigger to a smaller to a bigger, ect. Then change directions alot. Try some serpentines too! Just make sure you always have a steady secure outside rein. =)

Fail^ I know but...yeahh xD

Okay, so for the bucking issue I would check your saddle fit and maybe have chiropractor out to check if he has some back issues. If that is fine then I would work on first of all, not letting your legs go forward in the first place. Also you might want to ride with a bit longer rein for a little while so that you can teach him leg cues instead of having to use your reins.

As for the headset, I would recommend LOTS of figures and suppling exercises. You could try serpintine with added circles. That is a wonderful exercise for get a horse bending, supple, and starting to lift their back up. Whatever figures you ride make sure you get him bending and work on suppleness!

Hope I helped. PM me if you have questions!

thanks again!!!! and my cues are with my legs it was the actual owner who used rein cue....she needs lessons but denies she's sucks at riding

FOr the headset do TONS of circles and ovals and serpentines whatever else thats circular and always bend him both ways.divide and conquer. What i do is i turn my horse in a really tight circle and bend him so my hand is literally behind my back and his nose is touching my boot. The rein that is turning his head will be tight at first, but keep doing the circle and he will eventually give.keep your inside leg on him the whole time until he gives you the rein. Once he gives you the rein start to do a bigger circle. Do it both ways and he will become softer and easier to get on the bit and bend.

Your hand should never be that far back, pulling on his mouth like that will never solve anything. ;)

Yeah, if he's had bad handling, bad handling isnt going to work. Try some half-halts, relax in your seat. Keep in mind its not always the horse. He might well be responding to something your doing. Experiment. Make sure he's not in pain, and make sure youre not inadvertently giving him false cues.

Yay! New Banner! Thanks Take Me home! I shall switch on and off with them.

I agree. How about shorter reins?
