Ok, so I am hoping to buy a young horse (6 months to 3 yrs.)  and teach it how to barrel race.  My horse I am barrel racing on now is fourteen and he is good, but he is not fast enough to get me where I want to be.  So I want to train a colt to barrel race and while I am waiting for the colt to be finished with its training I will continue riding Rockett.  I have a good idea on how to train a young horse, but this will be my first time to train one, so I was just wondering if anybody had any tips for me?? Thanks!

Are you talking about getting a greenie and training from there? Or are you planning on doing ALL the training?

I really prefer a greenie and then finish it's training, but it depends on what my dad can work out with the man he knows.  I understand how to do ALL the training, but I just wanted to know if anybody had certain tips for me.

Ive learned that it is a good idea not to start running a horse until they are about three because it seems like most younger horses cant handle the stress and blow up on ya

I'm riding a 5 year old who's just been started on barrels.  Don't take it too fast, work up slowly or they will really get mad at you.  Sorry, not much help. =/

All I can say is start with the basics..you need a good foundation on a barrel horse. Work on circles, backing, whoas and how to propel from their hind-end first. Then introduce the pattern SLOWLY. Also have their trust and respect and master riding him before you go to the barrels, if there's a kink, work it out, don't ignore it. Take the time and teach them right.

exactly. The quickest way to ruin a good horse is to rush them through everything and have them running hard before they are ready for it mentally and physically, so take it slooow.

just take it really slow and after he can do circles stop and any other basic stuff take him and start the pattern at the walk and stop and back up at the checkpoints and keep increasing speed eventually he will rate the barrels on his own. hope it helps, it worked for my horse.

to go fast you have to go slow first....

PM for questions. I will be happy to help.

There are so many different drills you can do with young horses that I would be here all day telling you the ones I know.

Thanks everyone for all of the information! I've been researching a lot about barrel training, but it was kind of vague.  So thanks for all of the tips!  I even wrote them down!  And I will PM if I ever get stuck.

just take it really slow.  make sure you can do the pattern perfectly before you even think about adding speed to it.  Also once you add speed to it, make sure you dont run your horse all the time, make sure you make them walk/trot/canter patterns from time to time.

Speed is added on once you get good. So for now, if you have a greenie, don't even think about loping the pattern.

Don't even start on the pattern until you have a good stop and sit down on their hindquarters, a good handle on your horse on the flat, and they can turn well. Neck reining is always a plus.

Working on side passing at a young age is also valueable for the pattern. If you come up to one, whether its at the walk or even trot, if you come up too closely to it, it could cost you a barrel, so moving off your leg is invalueable.

Jumper's back, probably not the technical term, is when the back muscles are very sore and weak. It's caused when a performance horse, english or western, is pushed too hard too early. It takes months of rehabilitation exercizes and chiropractic messaging to get the horse back to where he can do more than walk/trot work. Boomer was so sore when i got him that his back would calapse when you put the slightest pressure on his back, he wouldnt allow you to lift his tail, and all four feet would knock over a ground pole when he would walk across it.

Yay! New Banner! Thanks Take Me home! I shall switch on and off with them.

Okay too start off

1. Since youngins are like usually full of energy and thinking about a hundred things at one, you should start off walking and trotting in the pasture for about 20min.

2. the most basic things is to make sure he gives to pressure, gives at the poll, moves away from leg pressure, and moves laterally.

3. you should check out Charmayne James's book of barrel racing

Take it slow my horse was trained to fast when he was younger. You can ruin a horse if u aren't careful.!!take it one day at a time geth the book training the wright way! It really has good info and helped
me to fix pipers problems and will help u start a greenie on barrels and don't work on barrels everyday so u don't burn out ur greenie!! Good luck!
