Hehe, so I started riding Welly tonight and I love her, except that she doesnt bend xD Her neck will bend, and she'll turn, but her body doesnt really bend. Her stomach gets in the way. She has a pretty big hay belly. Shes also naturally stocky, shes a Welsh Cob, so she isnt as massively overwieght as she looks, that just doesnt help.

So obviously I can work on things like circles and serpentines to help with her bending, but I was actually wondering if you guys had any really good fitness tips for her. Im leasing her for the rest of the month I guess, I think I will continue after that but Im not 100% decided yet. Mostly, it depends on if I can find another horse or not. But anyways, in the few rides I have on her that arent lessons, any suggestions?

Ok I dont really have any fitness tips but I do have bending help. My FAVORITE figure for bending is a serpintine with added circles. When you cross the centerline and change bend you add in a 10m circle and then continue your serpintine with the other added circle. (If you have a young horse it might be too much bend though) You can also add circles when you bend on the sides. I dont know if this makes sense so sorry.

Also your horse just might seem to have a "hay belly" but is really just not moving her ribcage over in which case: more bending!!

hope that helped!!

This also sounds like my lesson horse. I have done lots of bending with him and now you can actually tell that he has withers

I don't know if you trail ride a lot, but it helps to get a horse in shape. Riding up and down hills a lot helps too if you have any around your place.

Thanks  ALcowgurl26 for the awsome banner!

Id love to take her on a trail ride, but at my barn you have to have an adult with you and no adults are ever free :(

Fitness plan I have for Spencer when I get back from vacation, feel free to use it:

lunge warmup:10-15

30-45 minutes hill work (lots of trot, some canter, slower down, faster up)

30 minutesjumping, grids poles, extending, working on bending lines (good for bending) grids and bending lines help with flexibility.

20-30 minutes flat/dressage

I've had that in my mind for a while (been dying to try it out), and it's not everyday, don't worry, only about twice a week.

Try getting hre in shape first by doing hill work (if you don't have grids you can attatch a special weight thing to her back feet), then loosen her up with grids, then work on bending by bending lines and... just bending

Wow...that is a LOT of work in one ride even if its only twice a week. Thats 1:45hr of work! Especially if your horse is chubby and doesn't have a lot of muscle you could definitly over work him with this.

I would suggest for dropping weight maybe a grazing muzzle (if he's a big grazer) and a slight cutback of grain. Also start by riding him 45min-1hr three times a week and make it hard work. Eventually make it everyday. Hope that helps

That includes rests in it, I forgot to include that. I still count that as working though. Also, i know when he needs to stop, if he needs to stop after 30 minutes, we'll stop, if he needs to stop after an hour, we'll stop, but that doesn't mean you can't work at the walk! I also wouldn't suggest that whole large time frame to work as I said, that was for justthe general lay out. (so youc  could work up to that long as she gets more fit, and by that time, you won't need as much of the hilss and things).

Hahaha, Welly doesnt even get grain. She's completely grass and hay fed. She also isnt mine, so I cant really put a grazing muzzle on her...and yeah obviously Im not going to work her hard for two hours, but those general concepts with time periods that would suit her.

Haha! Spencer only gets grain so he'll come into the barn every day and get some human contact, he's so fat he doesn't need any, but apparently he's sliimmed up while I was gone on vacation because he's been stuck in his stall all day keeping my instructers alwayslamehorse company.
