hey! i bought a four year old paint gelding a few months ago.(he's turning five tomorrow!:)) i couldn't ride him tho b/c of my stupid grades and i got grounded. then when i did ride him he behaved really well. but when i tried to lunge him, he kept trying to come to the inside. Even when the owner of the barn i board him at worked with him, he kept trying to come in. I've tried using a lunge whip but it didn't work. he just got all scared and wouldn't do anything. I've even tried lunging him without the lunge line but, that didn't do much to help. if you have any advice, please help me! Thanks for any answers!

I dunno if this will help but here I go..

So you need two people. One have the LUNGE line and you have the LEAD one. Okay, so this is a workout. Just run with the horse in the circle until he/she gets used to going around. Use a crop with you so if she/he doesn't work good, spank him with it from behind or just crack a lunge whip. A spank or few won't hurt it a bit. OR just free lunge him/she. xD

I doubt this is going to work. xDD

He may not know how to lunge . . .  Did his old owners say he could?

That's what I was thinking...
One time someone tried to lunge our 'special' horse is the barn, and they took him in the round pen and he just rolled. xDD

That actually works xD I've had my mom run around with Dallas while he was on the lunge line because he fails at lunging to the right, and he was actually decent.

Rio does that. I lunge him with the whip and sometimes he'll start coming to me and my instructor told me to keep him moving and when he starts coming into the inside I have to like crack the whip behind him a bunch of times and he goes back out. Or sometimes what my instructor would do is lift her arms in the air and run towards him like 1 or 2 steps while cracking the whip lol. It worked!

LOL this reminds me of when my mom did this for me when Kiss was being lazy and I couldn't move fast (like with my knee) and she made a game out of it lol but the next day when i did it by myself w.o. her out there she went perfect. hahaha sorry I'd say find out if he even knows how to lunge..

Yeah, what else someone said, have someone leading him on the outside too, just to keep him out until he understands what he's supposed to be doing.

If he still tries to come in after you do that, use a longe whip. Whenever he tries to come towards you point the whip at is shoulder.

It sounds like maybe when you used it before you maybe didn't have it pointing at his bum while you longed?

You should look like this: think of it as making a triangle with the line the whip and the horse.

When he tries to come in adjust your whip to look like so and drive him out.

If he stops and just stares at you flick your whip and drive him back out to the circle. :P

Anyways
haha sorry for the novel xD
hope you can use that :).

I pretty much agree with everyone else. Soem horse are actually trained, though, to stop and turn towards you. It's stupid and my horse did the same thing it just takes time and you have to work on it. Though I wouldnt reccommend the two people thing. Somehow I don't think it will work. A lunge whip used properly should work.
