He isn't light AT ALL (I haven't ridden him with a bit yet, but I want to teach him in a halter first) and he doesn't bend. He knows how to lunge, but he's so desensitized that he doesn't respect the carrot stick. How do I get him to be lighter and bend properly?

I'd first fill out a Horsenality profile on him. He sounds like an Introvert to me -- though Left Brain or Right Brain depends.
Regardless, to get him to be lighter, use your phases correctly. Long phase one....quick 2, 3, 4. Then he'll learn that Phase 1 actually MEANS something. If he's a Right Brain Introvert, then you don't want to use this technique, because it's going too fast for them. With RBIs (as they are called) you want to be slllloooowwwwww. They need it to think.
Try a lot of lateral flexion, figure 8s, and sideways, squeeze, friendly games. Circling game over jumps, cavalettis, and a hill will also help

RE: Parelli Chat

Paints-4-Ever (10/11/2008)

Carribean Cream (10/9/2008)

Savvy_Rider (10/5/2008)

Paints-4-Ever (10/5/2008)

Savvy_Rider (10/5/2008)

Paints-4-Ever (10/5/2008)

Savvy_Rider (10/5/2008)
Paints-4-Ever (10/5/2008)
Personally I don't really like Perelli. The new Parelli level 1 is 14 hours of DVDs and about 10 booklets/2 or 3 books of valuble information. It should go for about $450 (at $25 per DVD and $30 per book...which is just about the average price when it comes to horse training material) but it goes on eBay for like $50 - $150 now. And it's a GREAT way to start a partnership, especially with difficult horses.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Parelli-Partnership-Level-1_W0QQitemZ220290484950QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item220290484950&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A15%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
http://cgi.ebay.com/Parelli-Level-1-Horsemanship-Program-6-dvd-set_W0QQitemZ280273218887QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item280273218887&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A15%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
PM me if you want more info or anything :)

RE: Parelli Chat

Paints-4-Ever (10/5/2008)

Savvy_Rider (10/5/2008)

Paints-4-Ever (10/5/2008)

Savvy_Rider (10/5/2008)
Paints-4-Ever (10/5/2008)
Personally I don't really like Perelli. All I'm trying to say is you don't need parelli to have a great realashonship with your horse and be able to ride it well.
P.S. My trainer is very good at having us "thinking how the horse would think" and parelli doesn't seem that "natural" for horses but that's my opinion.

That's great that you have an opinion and all -- and you aren't coming onto this thread with the "PARELLI IZ STOOPID!!!1111' point of view -- I really respect that...but....is it really necessary?
Well yes and no. No because most of the people on this thread love Parelli.
Yes because I have met too many people who do Parelli that think it is the only way to get results and other way are "Cruel" not all Parelli people but too many for my liking have this point of veiw.
Anyway thank you for not jumping all over me like "YOU DON'T LIKE PARELLI YOUR SOOO MEAN AND YOU HORSE MUST HATE YOU" like I've seen happen to other people in the past.

I'm definitely not the kind of person who thinks that people who aren't apart of the program are horse abusers -- but I do recognize that Parelli is just good horsemanship...whether you call it 'natural horsemanship' or 'classical horsemanship' or whatever. When it all comes down to it, horsemanship is what it is....And I hope what I just said made sense, haha.
But I personally choose to follow the Parelli Program because it's just about the most effective way to learn good horsemanship.

RE: Parelli Chat

horseychic1012323 (10/5/2008)
I might try this out with one horse I ride.
Is it a good way to bond because the horse and I have noo bond at all lol and I really want one with her.

Shes a saddlebred and can be sneaky and stuff.

Should I try it and if so what are some good places (websites) to learn because as i've read other places the program is realllllly expensiveeee and i can't afford it lol

HorseyChic

heres a link to the parelli 7 games
http://iceryder.net/7games.html
edit-heres a beter link
http://www.naturalhorse.co.uk/training/7games.htm

RE: Parelli Chat

I might try this out with one horse I ride.

Is it a good way to bond because the horse and I have noo bond at all lol and I really want one with her.

Shes a saddlebred and can be sneaky and stuff.

Should I try it and if so what are some good places (websites) to learn because as i've read other places the program is realllllly expensiveeee and i can't afford it lol

HorseyChic

RE: Parelli Chat

Savvy_Rider (10/5/2008)

Paints-4-Ever (10/5/2008)

Savvy_Rider (10/5/2008)
Paints-4-Ever (10/5/2008)
Personally I don't really like Perelli. We've been kind of stuck on change of direction on the circling game. Sometimes she'd pin her ears, come at me, and/or rear and today I was really studying the Problem Solving in the Liberty and Horse Behavior (thank goodness for it!) and it really helped. Of course it was me that was causing it, and today I finally found out what! :D I kept making her feel wrong, and I was unconfident so why should she trust me? Watching Linda always helps my confidence and it showed me what I was doing wrong. The horses she was doing it wasn't as extreme as Ferra's gotten, but it's the same concept and man did it help!!! She did it without any fuss and if she started to look cranky i'd shut it down and she went on perfectly. I didn't make her feel wrong when she asked a question and wanted to come in. I'd let her in and i'd be able to practice my send. :P :) Thank you Parelli!

RE: Parelli Chat

Carribean Cream (9/28/2008)
Jesus. She just said that she doesn't care for it.
But I never heard Parelli say, "Buy this halter and your horse will never pull again." The halter doesn't do anything but enforce stuff, it's the training that gets the horse to stop pulling. And you can do Parelli with whatever equipment you'd like, you don't HAVE to buy the stuff. =/

RE: Parelli Chat

Jesus. Nothing is wrong with Natural Horesmanship, don't get me wrong, but when you turn it into, well, for lack of a better word, a 'store' - "buy this halter and your horse will never pull you again because of ..." No. Proper training gets a horse to stop being dominant.
Ugh.

Okay, this is NOT a "bash Parelli" topic. If you don't like Parelli fine, but you don't have to complain about it here.

I was not complaining. I was stating my opinion, which I am legally entitled to. I am not "bashing" Parelli, simply saying that he turned perfectly fine Natural Horsemanship into a franchise. I think NH is fantastic, and can work wonders. I just feel that PNH is saying to people 'buy this and you have a perfectly trained horse!', which anyone with a brain knows is false. People will, and have, bought horses based on their PNH level, not by whether the horse is sound, rideable, has a good temperment, etc. etc. Again, I think NH is wonderful. But when someone goes and tries to sell you a relationship with your horse, I think that is morally wrong.

Haha. I didn't say you couldn't state your opinion, but it'd be nice if you didn't do it here. And I really don't think that Parelli is doing this just for the money. If you think that that's fine. And Parelli does not say "buy this and you will have a perfectly trained horse", but there is tools that will make certain things easier to accomplish.

Wow - a person was nice to my mean response XD (Not a bad thing, though =])
I see what you mean by to help accomplish something, but it's the same sort of thing with a mean bit or draw reins =]

Lol.
Yeah. And now HI has this whole section devoted to him. It annoys me.

Haha.
