Maybe if the horse was two it'd make more sense. By “he” Jim meant a big, 1 and a half year old caramel colored thoroughbred horse. He was going to be trained to race and replace George Lewis’ previous racehorse Brownie. Brownie was too weak to race in any more races. Her ankles were too weak and the jockey could feel her slowing down each race. Brownie was now only kept for breeding.

George is a 6’ tall man with dark brown hair. He isn’t the skinniest guy either. He loves the racing business and has been in it for 10 years and has owned 5 horses. Jim is the exact opposite. At 5’2” and 120 pounds he is perfect for a jockey. Jim is very serious about his job; he would do anything to keep it. He even secretly wishes that George would stop training horses so young.

“Yes, I know Jim and he also loves running which will help us a lot in the races. I think she will be a winner.” said George.

“I sure she will” said Jim

“Hey Bob what do you want for him?” asked George

“$60,000” said Bob, who was the owner of the horse.

“I’ll take her!” said George as he took out his checkbook. In about an hour the new horse would be his and at his barn. They would start training the next day. On the drive home Jim skimmed through George’s book on famous racehorse names to decide what the horse’s race name should be. One name caught his eye and that name was Three Strides Before the Line. The horse would be nicknamed Three Strides. He had no idea why but the name seemed to fit the horse. George agreed with Jim. The horse was now named and they were almost home.

The minute they pulled in the driveway George’s wife, Kate, and his daughter, Jill, came running out of the horse to see the new horse. While Jim was unloading Three Strides, Jill couldn’t wait to see him. The minute he was in the stall Jill ran up to him and they seemed to bond instantly.

“Daddy, he’s beautiful, I love his color and he’s so big even though he’s not even 2. Please wait ‘til he’s 2 to start training him. I’ve been reading and all the books say that training a horse before its 2 makes them more likely to have weak ankles and that’s what happened to Brownie. I think Three Strides could be a winner if you would only wait ‘til he’s 2” Explained Jill.

“Jill, you know this is what your father does and he can’t afford to wait ‘til Three Strides is 2. He’ll be fine, he’s already really strong.” Said Kate

The next day George brought Three Strides to the racetrack to begin training. George found James, the exercise rider. At 5’7” and 150 lbs James was very big for a racehorse rider. He was lucky to have a job with a racehorse. George thought he was a great exerciser; he pushed the horses and knew what George wanted, a winning horse. Jim on the other hand hated what James did but he would never admit that.

A week later George had Jim get on the horse instead of James. George said to go around the mile long track once and push Three Strides as hard as he could and as much as he opposed he did it. About a quarter of the way around the track he heard “Stop, you’re pushing me too hard. Please, please stop I don’t want to run any more.” Thinking that it was his head playing tricks on him he kept pushing the horse. A few seconds later he heard: “Jim please stop you know this is wrong. Please save me instead of your job.” After hearing this he knew something was going on and the only thing he could think of was Jill playing a trick on him and since he thought it was a trick he kept going. They made it around the track in the fastest time ever.

Over the next 3 weeks Jim heard the same things over and over again. He thought he was going crazy and eventually learned to ignore it. But the next time Jim rode him he heard something that made him think. He heard: “Jim I’ve warned you so many times, please convince George to stop pushing me so hard or I’m going to stop it myself.” Jim thought nothing of it and thought it was Jill again. He never once thought it was the horse.

Later that night Jim went to talk to Jill. He kept it very simple and said, “Jill, stop playing games with me. I know its you.” Jill thought he was crazy but didn’t feel like fighting with him.

Three Strides first race was scheduled for a week later. George decided that he didn’t need to be run anymore until then. Jim was very happy about that but was worried that if he wasn’t run until the race she might get bored.

A week later they brought Three Strides to the track to have her first race. They got her ready and took her into the starting gate. She was very well behaved and did perfectly unlike half of the other 6 horses. At the whistle they all left the gate at a very fast speed. As they went around the corner Three Strides was in 3rd. He passed another horse and finished in 2nd.

George was very happy but not pleased enough. He set up another race for 3 days later. In those 2 days before the race George demanded that Jim work her as much as possible. He did as told and when race day came but Jim and Three Strides were exhausted but knew they had to do as well as they could.

Once again Three Strides did perfectly in the starting gate unlike all the other horses accept one. Just from that Jim knew he was going to have a tough race. And Jim was right. Right as the gates opened the horse was out at full speed and so was Three Strides. Three Strides managed to stay either in 2nd or right next to the other horse the whole time. In the last 15 yards though Three Strides got in 1st place but 3 strides before the finish line she collapsed. Jim went down with him and the vet came immediately. Three Strides had to be put to sleep, she had shattered both front ankles and one of the other horses stepped on his nose. Jill ran out to the track screaming. She had had a bond with this horse and she told her dad that he would have weak ankles. Jim then realized that the voice he heard was Three Strides’ and he now felt bad that he didn’t listen. George felt guilty for this injury because his daughter warned him. All of a sudden the name clicked. Three Strides before the Line. Three strides collapsed 3 strides before the finish line. Everything made sense now.

Later that night Jill went to talk to Jim and told him everything. The way she knew everything about the weak ankles was from Brownie and other horses talking to her. She believed in horses talking to her even though no one else did. Three Strides had been telling her that he was getting really weak but he wanted to make George happy. He knew he was going to collapse but she kept going anyway. He was a very loyal horse.

Two weeks after Three Strides died Jill wrote an article for the newspaper describing what training horses too early. Jill helped him and during that time she told him all about Three Strides talking to her. George wasn’t surprised. The article was in the newspaper the next week. The next day George bought his next horse, a horse like none of the others he had previously owned. She was a fairly small horse that wasn’t a thoroughbred. She was also 3 when George bought her and she had never been trained to race. That horse went on to be one of the most successful racehorses ever. She won 3 <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Kentucky Derby’s and many other huge races. While other horses that were younger than her and had much more training were collapsing she was winning races and had a longer career. From that, other racehorse owners started training horses later and every year there were fewer and fewer horses collapsing from being weak.

George believed that all of this was Three Strides’ Dream the whole time she was living and that she would be very happy if she were still alive but if Three Strides was still alive there would be more and more racehorses collapsing each year. Even though Three Strides was dead she was still alive. George gave Three Strides a new nickname and from then on whenever they talked about Three Strides they called her the Everlasting horse.
