So, I ran my horse, Freedom, in a down and back class today for the first time ever. She has this huge thing for running, it's awesome, so I thought I'd take her into just one class of gaming. We got a 14 second run which in my opinion, really isn't too, too bad, don't you think for a first timer? Everyone else ran 10s and there was one 9 second one. I'd really like to get my times lower and try to make something out of gaming with my horse and I think speed is what I really need to work on. How can I improve my horse's speed? Any ideas are very much appreciated.

I was also wondering, how do you teach a horse to do flying lead changes? My horse doesn't know how to do them and I'd really like to try doing barrels and pole bending (and keyhole) next year.

Thanks in advance,

Megan

Im not sure what you mean by improving speed. All I do to make my horse go faster is put my heels into her and the little pleasure horse will be a frikin NBHA horse. Crops do nothing. I've tried. Oh and flying changes are pretty difficult to master at first. First you want your horse soft and supple and really listening to you. It should be able to move off your leg and sidepass somewhat. First you may want to try the simple lead change so your horse knows what your asking. When your going around the arena to a couple of circles about half the size of the arena and then once you get to the middle of the arena and somewhat facing the other side break to a trot a couple of strides and use your opposite foot and hand cues and push her back into a lope and she should be in the correct lead. Oh and keyhole, you dont have to change leads. Its just for poles and barrels mostly.

Yeah, okay. I'll have to try that for lead changes. Once you get past the simple lead changes, how can you get to just "flying" lead changes? How do you do them when you neck rein?

As for the speed, I actually found an article and I'm tempted to try it.

I've got the sidepassing covered. I actually went in a trail class yesterday and got a 1st. I'm still working on getting it without the pole, but it's progress and I only started teaching her the trail obstacles two weeks ago. Literally, Im not kidding.
